Background
Dr. Syafiq Saiful is a building physicist with a PhD from Loughborough University, an accredited BAGUS facilitator, and an EDGE Expert. He founded Optisim Consulting to bring simulation-led performance work — and the certification pathways that make it count — to Brunei's built environment.
Doctoral research
His doctorate tackled a problem central to the tropics: how to retrofit cooling-dominant dwellings under future climate scenarios. The work used dynamic building simulation, parametric analysis, and Python-based optimisation to identify cost-effective retrofit pathways, and included generating multi-year future weather files.
National-scale energy planning
Alongside Optisim, Syafiq continues to develop building energy-modelling methodologies and low-carbon technology suitability assessments, supporting Local Area Energy Planning across UK local authorities, combining GIS-integrated spatial analysis with building-performance modelling. That work — modelling whole stocks of buildings to inform national-scale decisions — is where Optisim's long-term vision for Brunei comes from.
